Implantable Loop Recorder


What is an Implantable Loop Recorder (ILR)?
An ILR is a small battery powered device with metal casing that can record abnormal heart rhythm automatically or upon being activated by patient/carer.

What is an Implantable Loop Recorder used for?
Your doctor may recommend an ILR if you have been experiencing blackouts, palpitation or suspected of having certain abnormal heart rhythm.

How is an Implantable Loop Recorder procedure done?
Following local anesthetic, a 1 cm incision will be made over the skin on the left side of the chest. The ILR is then inserted under the skin but in front of the muscle/bone.

How long does an Implantable Loop Recorder last?
The device is very reliable and has battery life of over 18 months with normal use. When the ILR successfully records heart rhythm of interest or make a relevant diagnosis or when the battery runs out, the ILR will then be removed.
